“To be, or not to be together” (Tusk, Feb 2, 2016):

The head of the European Commission, Donald Tusk (not Trump, although the Trump family name came from Germany) made concessions to David Cameron, the British Prime Minister who is going to organize his “Brexit” referendum within months (I say). Tusk’s concessions seem reasonable to me (including blocking a measure opposed by more than 50% of the national Parliaments). This said, the European Parliament and the European Council (all 28 national governments arguing together) will have to adopt Tusk’s proposals before they can be formally proposed to Great Britain. (Who said Europe was not already democratic?)

Reader GMax: You seem to agree with Rousseau that civilization is at fault [with the rise of slavery, sexism, plutocracy]:

Answer: No, not at all, except in a trivial way (all those ills require a civilization to exist, before it can be affected by them!). Only Rousseau’s grossest intuition was correct. That the savage was “noble” and innocent was not. Primitive societies are extremely violent. The point is that, to optimize civilization, one has to curb plutocracy, as much as possible, and torque it into simple meritocracy.

War Inside Damascus, Syria, February 2, 2016.

What happened in Syria is a recent demonstration of plutocracy unchained: a heir who had it all, Assad, refused to relinquish power. Result; more than ten million refugees, and 300,000 dead.

Reader Duviel put in doubt my patriotism, and the importance of the Franks …”there are many in America that are not American… It has to do with one simple thing. Do you love your country?…Is your loyalty to this country… ahead of any other nation?

Answer: This is the scream from all over, what the extreme right feeds on, all over.

So I am accused to be anti-American, because I talk about history too much?

The “Franks” and the “French” are two different concepts. The “Franks” are those through whom the Greco-Roman inheritance was transmitted to the West. They are as much, no less, forefathers of the British, Americans, or the French… Yes, Russia is another story (the Greco-Roman inheritance went through Constantinople there…. and even worse.)

If Canada was better on a particular value (as it used to) than France, Britain, the USA, I would defend it… On that value. This is why I am often extolling Switzerland. Many people have several nationalities. And then there is European CITIZENSHIP. I have met New Yorkers who detested California, even criticizing the Californian accent, claiming it sounded like French, and making fun of me because I spoke “flat” according to them…

One thing, though: I am never afraid of criticizing a group, including a nation, just because it’s not PC to do so.

Nationalism can be good, or can be bad. If a nation adopts my values, I am all for it. As you say, in the end.

Not being PC, and making the blood roil has the advantage of inciting to talk about difficult issues. For example if I say that I despise the Tibetan Superstition, it’s a good occasion, agreeing on that point with the Chinese Communists, to discuss what exactly what the Chinese Han are doing… occupying Tibet.

American Contempt For Europe Is Misinformed:

First, America comes from Europe: from the tip of Greenland and Barrows, Alaska, all the way to Patagonia, America is a European Colony. It is fashionable to spurn Europe’s lesser economic success, forgetting the USA rigged it that way.

Particularly obdurate Yankees do not understand that North America is a very wealthy continent full of oil, gas, minerals, water and arable land. Europe is half the size, twice the population and does not have oil and gas. Also American plutocrats have organized the world to serve them, they are the greatest thieves who ever walked the Earth.

Taxing the hyper wealthy is not about “wealth distribution”: It’s about democracy. Some are proud to be in the 20% (hahaha say the 1%) and do not see that. It’s about NOT having the president putting Bill & Melinda Gates in charge of education (just because the president esteem, and love wealth). It’s about politics not just serving the .1%… It’s about nearly all the powers in just a few hands. Primarily.

Much Immigration, Much Increase Of Wealth:

(This is basically the exact opposite of what Marine Le Pen and her ilk claim.)

Great Britain Is Not In Border-Free Europe, But Has Highest Immigration. While Making Loudest Sound Against Immigration:

In thirty-five years, Britain and Germany had 14 million net immigration, France 7 million, USA well above 50 million. Immigration rate into Britain is three times France, 3/4 Germany (for 2011-2015). In same period USA allowed 5 million new immigrants in, Canada, more than a million (as did Australia). Immigration correlates with an improving economy. Last year with numbers, UK had 330,000 net immigration, explaining it was ephemerally capable of passing France’s nominal GDP (it didn’t last).

Last point: if energy can be produced as cheaply in Europe as in the USA, will Europe become as rich as the USA? To a great extent, yes. In recent years, as the USA became less attractive, Mexicans tended to go the other way…
