Hormones Rule Reason

January 30, 2017

Is reason free as a bird? Well, first birds are not that free, and reason springs from brain organization, something that biochemistry built.

Old wisdom: there is reason, and then there is its opposite, its enemy, irrationality. New wisdom: reason is context dependent and context is hormonally determined.

In turn, hormones are dependent upon cognitive environment…

(Nietzsche already wrote people thought with their stomach:”a spirit is more similar to a stomach”. A general mood already found in Napoleon’s writings:”an army marches on its stomach”.)

Indeed, there are the hormones everybody has heard of, but less noticed are neurohormones, more recently discovered. Neurohormones double as neurotransmitters. Dependent upon hormonal, and neurohormonal activity, part of the brain gets active (at least that’s my hypothesis). So what? So, mental inertia. Reason does not remain a question of logic as found in logic text books, but also a question of chemical logic, and vast inertia, as sub-organs within the brain gets active, or asleep: a sub-organ will develop according to activity (say posterior pituitary gland, versus its anterior part: they secrete different neurohormones!)

There Are 50 Neurohormones Known. Moreover, There Are More Ephemeral "Neurohumors"... These Chemical Universe Means Bias & Inertia

There Are 50 Neurohormones Known. Moreover, There Are More Ephemeral “Neurohumors”… These Chemical Universe Means Bias & Inertia

Tied up with that concept of chemical machines as the factories of reason within the brain, is psycho-rigidity, also called by me “mental inertia”.

A practical example: many anti-Trumpists revel in hatred at this point. Differently from other activists such as Islamists, anti-abortionists, neoconservatives, etc., they are unfamiliar with hatred, they are accustomed to it, and they really love it. After a few months of this, they may find it addictive, and pursue it by sheer mental inertia.

Reason is not just about building neuronal connections, it’s about building chemical factories within the brain. Factories are infrastructure: they don’t go up, or down, easily.

So, if one wants to become a superior mind, not cannot just cultivate one’s logic and facts carefully, and hope for the best. To reach the highest and best reason, one also has to manage which experiences, emotions, or types of emotions one engages in, and one has engaged in, carefully: emotions and experiences build up the brain, one just cognitively, logically, but in its very chemical infrastructure, and what one has the propensity to engage in, like, love, or detest. Mental imprinting, even apparently distant imprinting, even apparently distant imprinting of one’s feelings, impacts one’s subsequent capability to generate superior reason.

So one cannot just think about a subject, roll-out the Socratic method, and get it right. One has first to be in the appropriate mood. Socrates did not know this, and that’s why he ended up drinking hemlock, after 501 members of the jury found “he had corrupted the youth” (Socrates’ students and lovers imposed dictatorship and various lethal mishaps upon Athens, and it was widely considered that Socrates taught his students, many more than 40 years younger than him, in a way which was not appropriate; Athens lost her empire, and half her population in the war…)

Speaking of Socrates, indeed, the philosopher was widely viewed, at the time, as “anti-demos”. Still, Socrates is always, apparently always very logical. So how could Socrates be both very logical, and very wrong? Simple. Socrates was chemically disposed against the total democracy instituted by Pericles (and his top philosopher friends and lovers) which made Athens a lasting jewel for civilization. Thus he rolled out plenty of very logical logic against democracy.

The brouhaha against the Trump order against immigrants from seven countries gave several examples of a similar type. Obama’s spokesman said“With regard to comparisons to President Obama’s foreign policy decisions, as we’ve heard before, the President fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion,”

Motivated by a mood of cheap vengeance, (but I can understand the motivation of jumping in at the first occasion,) and with the advantage of getting in the interventionist mindset (which I advocated). Also wrong in several ways: first Trump said it was not “anti-Muslim” (there too, the occasion was too good to show everybody who the boss was… while rushing US Army tanks to the Baltics, to help sober up Putin in advance of NATO deployment in Spring).

Second, and more importantly, we DO discriminate against faiths or religions: more than 99.9% of historical faiths and religions are outlawed in Republics such as the USA or France (and their many parrots around). Did you try a human sacrifice, Gallic, Punic, or Aztec style recently? Or eat someone, Polynesian style, as happened when the esteemed Captain Cook got cooked in Hawai’i? No. Not really: it’s not our taste anymore. A question of stomach, in more way than one.

This means that we do discriminate against individuals who would insist on bringing back those faiths or religions. And why? Because such faith and individuals promoting them are incompatible with Republican law.

That is exactly the case of those faiths and individuals promoting “Sharia”, the so-called “Muslim law”, which is incompatible with Republican law. If we get in a mood of compromise, there, we will hurt, fatally in the long run, the Republic. With Sharia, the proper mood for the Republic is not tolerance, but abrogation and retribution against its unlawful promoters.

I will give another example soon of chemistry ruling reason: Sartre, De Beauvoir and other “existentialists” being all too existential, namely ruled by a mood all too sympathetic too pleasing to those who have the biggest stick around, and above. Those had a mood of submission (as Obama did), a brain chemically made for submission, not rebellion (whereas Camus did, and so did most real resistance fighters).

Any logic, logical textbooks will reveal, is bounded by the universe in which it is applied. Alternative facts will call on a different universe, thus a different logic. And those universes are chemically dependent.

I don’t believe in the multiverse as a foundation for physics. However, the multiverse is a fact, for reason itself. And those various universes are made from alternative facts and chemistry.

How we feel, how we felt, implies how we think, and will think. I think, therefore, I am in some universe, somewhere. Reason is not the end-all, be-all. And one of the reasons for the lack of reason, beyond emotion, is that logic itself is not one: consider the Incompleteness Theorems in metamathematics. Beyond those, modern logic has been demonstrated to be pretty much anything we want. And we want what feels good.

Reason has its reason that only the heart knows.

Nuclear Winter? NO. Hélas.

January 29, 2017

Nuclear Winter Is Fake News. Nuclear war can, unfortunately, be fought:

Abstract: A little bit of thinking considering the largest H bombs exploded, volcanoes erupting, and recent giant fires in Kuwait, Indonesia, show that the hypothesized “observational” input on the Nuclear Winter theory was obviously false, not to say fake: H-bomb explosions cannot possibly have the cooling effect of a serious volcano: the material lifted by H bombs is neither enough, nor of the right quality, nor lifted high enough to cool the atmosphere as large volcanoes do. And the smoke of the subsequent fires, laden with carbon black, would not rise high enough for severe global effect as the eruption of a volcano such as Tambora.

We have lived, we still live, through the age of bogus theories, bogus, fake, false systems of thought, which we are supposed to adore like the “Golden Calf” of old.

Is this coming to an end? The Internet is putting a dent into old fashion gullibility, by exposing the cognitively innocent, the naive, and the nefarious psycho-rigid to alternative realities.

Much of Economics, Islam, “Liberalism”, “Existentialism”, “Postmodernism”, “Neoconservatism”, let alone “Marxism”, or even small-minded “Darwinism”, unthinking assertions on allegedly impervious ice sheets, and other aspects of the CO2 crisis, is bogus, biased, pseudo-science, fake, false, even nefarious.

I just discovered (personally; it turns out some deep minds like F. Dyson, had figured it out long ago) that the famed theory known as “Nuclear Winter” was bogus. That came after an esteemed commenter on this site asked me a question about it. I had always “believed” there could be a nuclear winter

I have no computation to show, but, come to think of it, I don’t believe in nuclear winter. What I have looked at is not computation, but pictures. A picture can be worth a thousand computations, especially if it contradicts them.

For example, according to classical aerodynamics, bees can’t fly: they are heavy, they can lift with their small wings. However, fly they do: the picture of a bee flying is worth a thousand computations made with insufficient theories.

(It is likely that, thanks to their twisting wings, bees generate vortices, and vortices can be mighty: straight wingtips generate vortices which slow standard Twentieth Century planes down; when that was discovered, wingtips were made to reduce vortices; conversely, bees use that effect in reverse!)

GlouconX, an esteemed contributor to this site asked:

http://www.nucleardarkness.org/warconsequences/fivemilliontonsofsmoke/#with100

Hi Patrice:

I’ve been meaning to ask for your expertise on this. Apparently, scientific studies show that an even a small war with much smaller weapons than countries currently have would still doom the planet with a catastrophic nuclear winter. This means that even a small nuke power like Israel or Pakistan could extinguish the human species, does it not?

First I did not read GlouconX’s link, because the answer jumped at me. I had believed in Nuclear Winter, long ago. But then it struck me that the theory could only be false.

My answer:

I don’t want to rain on your nuclear winter, but I think those who brandish nuclear winter made a mistake. (I wrote this before researching the subject, and coming across the quotes below in, say, Wikipedia, which agree with my position that Nuclear Winter is a bogus theory.)

We have the proof, from direct observation of giant H bombs, and volcanoes exploding, to fires in Kuwait, Indonesia in the last two decades. Here is a quote from:

NASA warns of worst ever forest fires, environmental disaster, as smoke blankets six countries

“Fires in Indonesia are not like most other fires. They are extremely difficult to extinguish,” NASA says. And they’re dirty.

The estimated greenhouse gas emissions from the 1997 fires were higher than average daily emissions from the entire US economy, on at least 26 days, according to the World Resources Institute.

And this season alone, the fires have released greenhouse gases equivalent to about 600 million tons or roughly the annual carbon emission output of Germany, according to NASA scientists.”

The paper referred to by GlouconX threatens us with “five million tons of smoke” In Indonesia, we are speaking of probably more than a billion tons of smoke (adding the fine particle in the smoke, with suspended hydrocarbons, and the greenhouse gases).

Giant H-Bonbs Are Not Giant Volcanoes, Hydrocarbon Smoke, Not Sulfates:

A nuclear fireball rises very quickly, very high, bringing up plenty of soil if close to the ground, or just heated air if exploded up high. Castle Bravo’s, which was a super gigantic explosion, produced a mushroom cloud which reached 40 kilometers, and all the smoke from combustion, coming much later, will not reach that high… Differently from a super giant volcanic eruption, which sends specially absorbing materials (sulfates, SO2) extremely high.

Absolutely gigantic bombs were detonated in the past. The worst, Tsar Bomba destroyed structures 1,000 kilometers away. For a picture of Tsar Bomba and where Obama got his ideas about Pakistan:

https://patriceayme.wordpress.com/2010/04/16/the-worst/

Anyway, even the worst explosion did not have much of a durable effect on the stratosphere. The explosion of Tambora in the early 19C created a local winter, for 100 hours: total darkness, cold… Then the cold extended all over the northern hemisphere, and the following year was the one ‘without a summer’: crops failed, because there was frost all over Europe, even in July, August. But that was a volcano. None of that with 15 megatons (US) and 50 megatons (USSR) bombs. The US one, Castle Bravo, was resting on the ground: that caused maximum fall-out, 2 kilometers crater, island annihilated, mushroom cloud of atoll debris going up 40 kilometers…

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Bravo

Even then, no nuclear winter to speak of… Nuclear winter proponents have to face the fact that the firestorm from exploding a nuclear bomb happens after the nuclear cloud has dissipated: three hours later for Hiroshima, thanks to Japanese paper houses.

Hiroshima’s blast was 16 kilotons. To duplicate a Hiroshima firestorm by conventional explosives would have used only 1.2 kiloton. The Nagasaki blast was more powerful: 22 Kilotons TNT. However, there was no firestorm. Nuclear bombs striking modern cities, even in India and Pakistan, would collapse concrete high rises, preventing fires, or at least fires so violent they could create a pyroclastic cloud reaching the stratosphere. During the Kuwait firestorm of more than 600 wells burning, up to six million barrels a day, the clouds stayed low, only rarely reaching 6,000 meters (whereas volcanic sulfates can be thrown well over 34,000 meters… that being the altitude for Pinatubo’s eruption of 1991…)

Wikipedia Admits Implicitly That Nuclear Winter Is Bogus:

If one reads in Wikipedia about nuclear winter, one sees this, to start with:

“Nuclear winter is the severe global-climatic-cooling-effect, HYPOTHESIZED[1][2] to occur after the ignition of a number of firestorms.[3] Such fires, which can inject soot into the stratosphere have historically occurred in a number of cities, with nuclear winter researchers using both Hamburg and the LESS FEROCIOUS Hiroshima firestorms as the principal examples.[4] However, AS FIRESTORMS ARE MOST FREQUENTLY ENCOUNTERED IN MUCH LARGER AREA WILDFIRES, THESE LATTER FIRES ARE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TODAY in assessing both the initial and present-day “nuclear winter” computer models.”

My point exactly.

A debate occurred in Nature in 2011. As Wikipedia puts it:

….”As MIT meteorologist Kerry Emanuel similarly wrote a review in nature that the winter concept is “notorious for its lack of scientific integrity” due to the unrealistic estimates selected for the quantity of fuel likely to burn, the imprecise GCM/global circulation models used, and ends by stating that the evidence of other models, point to substantial scavenging of the smoke by rain.[193] Emanuel would also make an “interesting point” about questioning proponent’s objectivity when it came to strong emotional or political issues that they hold.[194] Seitz also contends that many others are reluctant to speak out for fear of being stigmatized as closet Dr. Strangeloves, physicist Freeman Dyson of Princeton for example stated “It’s an absolutely atrocious piece of science, but I quite despair of setting the public record straight.”[195] Stephen Schneider for example was labelled a “fascist” for writing the critical paper, “Nuclear Winter Reappraised” according to Rocky Mountain News.”

It is characteristic of the PC disease: from pure Intellectual Fascism, many subjects are supposed to have PC assessments, and any deviation from the official PC view is characterized as “fascist”.

Unfortunately, the truth is worse than that: a nuclear war can be fought,

and it does not have to be small… So my angle is quite different. I don’t believe that exploding thousands of H bombs would have a significant effect on the climate (so the nuclear winter hypothesis is false, IMNSHO…). It’s true Pinatubo, the volcano, lowered temps by .5 Centigrade, worldwide. But the damned volcano sent very fine particles at an incredible height. H bombs won’t do that.

As I said, the truth is worse: nuclear war can be fought. It will have very adverse consequences, but it can be fought. It will kill billions, indirectly, by disrupting supplies, worldwide, starving people, exposing them to disease, secondary wars, cannibalism. But it can be fought.

During the 1940s and 1950s, the US systematically exposed soldiers and contractors, not just animals, to nuclear explosions. Once five guys were directly below an exploding  nuclear warhead in an air to air missile (detonation at 5,000 meters, 1.5 kt warhead). Photographers went from explosion to explosion, setting cameras a few hundred meters away, which took millions of pictures per seconds (most of them still classified). One of the most experienced of these photographers laconically commented that, whatever the H-bomb, he felt confident he knew what to do and how to survive it from some distance away… After the initial blinding flash which makes everything white, the fireball is exquisitely beautiful, with its sky filling ultra violet glow.

One Triumphant class French sub is undetectable, with its jet propulsion.

Triumphant carries 16 inter oceanic M51 missiles with ten MIRVs, each 150 kt (ten Hiroshima). One such missile could take out New York conurbation (pop 16 million). One, a single one, rogue sub of that class could basically kill half of the US, with a bit of luck…

We know that during the Cuban Missile crisis, one admiral, who was there mostly by accident, stopped the commander of a sub and the political/communist officer to fire a nuclear armed torpedo at an US carrier…

This means someone like Kim will be able to blackmail the US, within 5 years he basically announced for the New Year…

As Trump said, it won’t happen. No need to see Hitler getting ready this time, better than last time. As it is the West, if Russia stays neutral, can easily defang the rest of the world nuclearly, now.

If I were president, I would go see Putin, and have a frank discussion. US “INTELLECTUALS” misadvised big time the leaders of Russia in the 1990s… This has to be straightened out, and the competition with Russia should stop.

The danger of nukes is that they are city killers, and the tech to stop them, when they streak down at Mach 25, for sure does not really exist (lasers being the grail there… but lasers of a power we don’t have yet…)

Nuclear war can be fought, and it will be fought, lest measures are taken now. The Five Permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have no interest, and will have long no interest, whatsoever, to engage in nuclear war (they all control huge territories over land, and, or, sea (the latter as France, the US and the UK do). But plenty of other powers could have at some point interest to engage in war (the prime example being North Korea, Pakistan’s Wahhabists, another…).

To cut these dreadful possibilities down, one has to dramatically reduce the nuclear weapons arsenals. Start with Launch On Warning.

This is all the more urgent as “Nuclear Winter” has scared people away from nuclear war. Earlier, the exaggerated  fear of nuclear fallout scared people away from nuclear war. Extreme fear of fallout was justified in the 1950s, when the giant H bombs were tested: lack of precision in delivery made the military go for giant explosions. Nowadays military warheads have to be smaller (to be accompanied with lures and other devices) and precision is extreme.

Nowadays, a nuclear war looks, to specialists, like something that could be fought and won. The rumors have it that some Russian generals are ready to strike fear and submission in European contradictors, with a few well-placed nuclear explosions. Slipping down such a slippery slope has to be avoided. But that slippery slope will be best avoided by understanding exactly which consequences nuclear war entails. Nuclear winter is not one of these consequences.

Doomsday World

January 26, 2017

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists came out with its own little piece of anti-Trump propaganda, advancing its famous clock (the committees behind the Bulletin is full establishment, full of Nobel Laureates, etc.)

This is a Doomsday world. The fact that thousands of thermonuclear warheads can be “launched on warning” by a burned out computer chip, has a lot to do with it. The CO2 catastrophe is another.

Obama did nothing about “Launch On Warning” (LOW; my acronym). He did not even try to make it an issue. Given enough time, LOW will kill us all, from a sheer accident.

Trump should be encouraged to do something about LOW..

The French discontinued LOW. The Chinese are moving towards LOW.

Trump should make a deal with Putin: no more LOW. The nuclear subs are deterrent enough. They are deep in the water, they can lurk for months, undetected, LOW is not a consideration with them.

We now have a trigger for thermonuclear war: Prince Kim of North Korea, who killed many around him in  atrocious, albeit picturesque, ways, has little choice, but keep on doing what he does best.

Megalopolis Destroying Man Made Sun

Megalopolis Destroying Man Made Sun

France and the US use missiles with “buses” which can target independently up to ten 250 kilotons independently maneuvering thermonuclear warheads (accompanied with lures and decoys). One such missile could kill up to 35 million people. They can’t be recalled. Undetectable French and American nuclear submarines carry up to 16 such missiles (the UK has bought 4 now aging such subs from the US; France makes its own, mot modern of them all).

Such a bomb equals one million tons of TNT. The bomb weighs 1000 pounds. It does not cost much to make: around a million dollars, once one has the Plutonium for the “pit”.

Most nuclear weapons exploded in an attack on the U.S. will be “air” bursts high up, so that the blast overpressure will be spread out over a large areas, and start fires. The fireball is initially 50 million degrees Centigrades. Ten seconds after detonation the fireball is one mile across  and cools to 11 million degrees Centigrades (around 2,000, two-thousand, times the temperature of the surface of the Sun, Sol).

Four miles from detonation, winds reaches around 300 km/h (180 miles per hour). All standard houses and buildings “implode” from the overpressure wave, which is three times stronger than what is needed to crush a house, and then are swept away with the blast winds. At 7 kilometers distance, all ear drums are broken by the overpressure wave.

The “flash” of the explosion lasts 22 seconds. People 10 miles away receive 2nd degree burns, the winds reach hurricane force, shatter windows, and glass slivers will penetrate human flesh. Stay away from windows. At 80 kilometers, the fireball is brighter than the Sun.

Such weapons are in theory restricted to the fiver permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. It’s a long story which started in January 1938, when the French Republic, faced with Hitler, and knowing, from Nobel Irene Curie, that nuclear explosions were possible, started a nuclear weapon program, which four years later migrated to… Manhattan.

North Korea’s very young, Western educated Kim has nothing to lose. if his choice is between being eaten, alive, by dogs, as he did to his uncle, and starting a nuclear confrontation, he will choose the latter. Unfortunately, some higher-ups in China has found Mr. Kim to be useful for a sort of Machiavellian blackmail. That’s a bad combination, all the more as Xi, China’s dictator, has decided to invade the sea between many other powers which are not China, south of China (the unfortunately named “South China Sea”).

In this context, to pretend that Mr. Trump is, all by himself, a problem, when all that’s in place are Obama, and preceding presidents’ policies, is disingenuous. Mr. Trump should be encouraged to take the correct positions, not berated for policies he did not start, and may well try to discontinue.

For example the hyper expensive expansion of the US nuclear arsenal was launched, as a law, by Obama, not Trump. Accusing Trump of it, is a lie.

Trump, after being asked by some interviewer called David if measures against Islamists would make Muslims angry: “Anger? There is plenty of anger right now. How can you have more?… The world is a mess. The world is as angry as it gets…. You think that’s going to cause a little more anger? The world is an angry place. All of this has happened: we went into Iraq. We should not have gone into Iraq. We should not have got out the way we got out The world is a total mess. The world is a mess, David.”

Not just that, but it’s a thermonuclear mess, increasingly. So Trump is wrong here: the world could get much angrier. As I have argued, one thermonuclear bomb over a Western city would probably end democracy (for starters).

It’s a funny logic, by the way, our Muslim friends tend to use: measures against “sick and demented Islamists” are taken to be measures against all Muslims… by Muslim organizations, thus identifying Islamists and average Muslims. Not a good slope to slip on. President Donald Trump’ judgment on Islamists  (to be broadcasted later today): “Evil…Sneaky, dirty rats, which are sick and demented, and we are going to win”

Western Impotence Has Classical Precedents, So We Know What Not To Do:

A civilization under attack by some who are ready to die, to destroy it, has to exterminate its aggressors. Or it dies. Or it just lays there, doing nothing, as army ants crawl all over it, and devour it.

Against the insane, reason itself contends in vain. But nukes work.

Rome, Occidental and Oriental collapsed from military defeats (against Germans, Muslims). So did Athens.

Pretending Trump is the Devil for things he did not do, is exactly the same mindset which attributed the Peace Nobel Prize to Obama, for things he never did. In one case, as in the other, the plutocratic media decides that those who serve it well are saints, and those who threaten it, evil.

Making us all stupid in the process, hence easily manipulated into abject submission…

WE ARE MATHEMATICS

Mathematically Built Brain: The Example of Grid Cells, Incarnating Algebraic Geometry.

Understanding how the cognitive functions of the brain arise from its basic physiological components has been the final frontier in logic and rational science for thousands of years. (As I tried to explain yesterday, the superstitious religious fanatics tried their best to bury all of science, and the scientific mindset, the essence of humanity; they nearly succeeded!)

The 2014 Nobel was given to John O’Keefe (a “half”!), the rest jointly to May-Britt Moser and Edvard I. Moser “for their discoveries of cells that constitute a positioning system in the brain.” I will develop here the philosophical viewpoint, which is broader (O’Keefe’s career was steered by the influence of Hebb, the famous psychologist, who got the idea of the outside patterns imprinting the neurocircuitry of the brain).

Here is Hebb: “Let us assume that the persistence or repetition of a reverberatory activity (or “trace”) tends to induce lasting cellular changes that add to its stability.[…] When an axon of cell A is near enough to excite a cell B and repeatedly or persistently takes part in firing it, some growth process or metabolic change takes place in one or both cells such that A’s efficiency, as one of the cells firing B, is increased.”

Well it turns out that evolution has had even more imagination than that. I will even propose Patrice’s Neural Theory, a vast generalization.

Galileo famously said the language of nature was written in mathematics. It turns out that it is much more than that. Our brain is mathematically organized. What Descartes consciously discovered, a coordinate frame in which to set-up calculus, is automatically generated in the brain. This is the meaning of grid cells.

Grid cells are neurons that fire when an animal moving of its own free will traverses a set of small regions (firing fields) which are roughly equal in size and arranged in a periodic triangular array that covers all of the available environment. They were discovered in 2005 by a couple (literally) of Norwegian researchers, the Mosers, and rewarded by the Nobel Prize in 2014 (shared with O’Keefe, from London, who invented the basic experimental technique, and discovered “place cells)

Once set, navigation can be done in the dark, blinded. Scientists’ discovery that rodents, bats and nonhuman primates have a system in the brain for so-called “dead reckoning navigation”… “Dead reckoning” refers to the ability to navigate without external cues. The term comes from ship navigation. A crew will “take a sighting” via cues such as the stars or landmarks to determine where the ship is on a map. Then, when the ship moves, ‘dead reckons’ to update location on the map paying attention to speed and direction. The Greco-Romans already had such systems, with little paddled wheels counting the distance covered over the sea. It turns out that ‘dead reckoning’ is enabled by the grid cell system, inside the brain.

Recording Of Grid Cells Activity Inside Rat Brain (Jeffery Lab and others.)

Recording Of Grid Cells Activity Inside Rat Brain (Jeffery Lab and others.)

Kate Jeffery, a professor of behavioural neuroscience at University College London puts it this way:

“The importance of grid cells lies in the apparently minor detail that the patches of firing (called ‘firing fields’) produced by the cells are evenly spaced. That this makes a pretty pattern is nice, but not so important in itself – what is startling is that the cell somehow ‘knows’ how far (say) 30 cm is – it must do, or it wouldn’t be able to fire in correctly spaced places. This even spacing of firing fields is something that couldn’t possibly have arisen from building up a web of stimulus associations over the life of the animal, because 30 cm (or whatever) isn’t an intrinsic property of most environments, and therefore can’t come through the senses – it must come from inside the rat, through some distance-measuring capability such as counting footsteps, or measuring the speed with which the world flows past the senses. In other words, metric information is inherent in the brain, wired into the grid cells as it were, regardless of its prior experience. This was a surprising and dramatic discovery. Studies of other animals, including humans, have revealed place, head direction and grid cells in these species too, so this seems to be a general (and thus important) phenomenon and not just a strange quirk of the lab rat.”

We should have looked for Plato’s cave. It turned out that this cave has been built, is being built inside our heads all along! This cave is built-in two ways: automatically (grid cells) and as a response to the environment, by.us, from the outside, from the environment, in.

(So it matters what our brain experienced before to mold afterwards what comes in anew from the outside! No experience is a neutral experience!)

That cave is both a topology (what’s near and what’s not, the logic of place), and a basic geometry (the grid and its grid cells). To have a grid built automatically is the equivalent of having a reference frame in mathematics. It makes sense if one wants to make mathematics!

And not just mathematics, but even Infinitesimal Calculus! It is indeed clear that animals such as dogs have a mastery of calculus: experiences have shown this, and anybody with a dog throwing a stick sideways in water will see the dog running along the shore a bit, and then jump in the water, so as to minimize the time to reach the stick, a typical calculus problem. Dogs can do calculus, because they can make algebraic geometry in their brains, having a reference frame made of these grid cells! (If they had no grid cells, they would not be able to do calculus.)

Thus Descartes rediscovered, consciously, something which had been found, evolved and calculated by evolution half a billion years ago (or more!). The reference frame, also known now as the neuronal grid cell system, is basic to all of mechanics, even Poincare’-Lorentz Relativity.  (An open question: Quantum Physics uses even more general reference systems, Hilbert spaces; I will therefore predict that the brain has also that sort of organization!)

The world is not as astonishingly understandable, as Einstein would have it. Neuronal grid cell studies show that we are the world. Understanding the world is understanding ourselves.

The world is not just written in mathematical language, as Galileo found out. We are made mathematically. We think mathematically, because we are made of math. We are mathematics.

We are not just looking at shadows in a cave, as Plato would have it. And the cave was not given to us by the gods, as Socrates had it. We are the cave, we, and our personal history, built it.

Any new experience, idea or emotion, taught or experienced, is another brick in that wall of perception and analysis, we better consider it carefully, before indulging in it. Call that the Principle of Mental Precaution But that Principle extends also to what we chose NOT to experience, which can be just as bad, if not worse.

You are not just what you think. You mentally are what you were submitted to, and what you decided to submit to. Fate is written in mathematical patterns, one theorem made out of neurons, their axons, dendrites and supporting glial cells, at a time.

Such theorems are written with the physics of minds, just as sturdy as the physics of stars. Just as hopeful, just as ominous.

Plato thought mathematics were “forms”, out there, outside of the physical world. This is not what science is finding. There are not “forms” out there, and physics, nature, somewhere else. Our minds are literally made of math.

So here is my theory:

Whatever exists in mathematics exists in the brain. And reciprocally.”

Fascism Killed Atomism

January 24, 2017

Around the Fourth Century before Common Era (4C BCE), evolution, natural and artificial selections, atomism, and non-Euclidean geometry were well-known. Actually the making of super-cattle, evolutionarily engineered by the Greeks, was one of the main Greek “national” incomes. Hundreds of books on atomism existed. Six non-Euclidean (both elliptic and hyperbolic) theorems made it into Aristotle.

What happened next?

Fascism. Not just political fascism, but what political fascism needed as its ultimate foundation, intellectual fascism. Christianism destroyed all the reasonable knowledge it could find, to show neither facts, nor reason had an existence, let alone merit.

Science and Reason Are Natural Enemies of Fascism, Thus Atomism Was Enemy to Emperor and Christianism Alike:

Ancient Greek science was most advanced. However, it depended heavily on the philosophical method. We see it now only through the extreme filter of Roman imperial and then Christian fascism, which did their very best to obliterate science.

The reason? Science depended upon reason, and was a monument to reason. Reason was the enemy of the fascist “Princeps” system set-up by Augustus in 27 BCE. Augustus’ system made no sense: it claimed the Republic, and the rule of law, persisted, yet, the Republic was led by a “First Man” (“Princeps”) whose extraordinary powers broke Cleisthenes’ “Isonomia” (equality relative to law). (Cleisthenes was the plutocrat whose revolution led Athens to total democracy.)

One Secretary of Popes, an Avid Book Hunter, Found Just ONE Copy of Lucretius, De Natura Rerum, Of The Things Of Nature, Saved By Frankish Monasteries.

One Secretary of Popes, an Avid Book Hunter, Found Just ONE Copy of Lucretius, De Natura Rerum, Of The Things Of Nature, Saved By Frankish Monasteries.

Not just that, but it was not clear how the Prince (“Princeps” was transformed into “Prince” by the French) gathered all these powers. Thus succession from Prince to Prince was unclear, and, generally involved strife, corruption, if not outright war.

“Principate” Rome could never figure succession out. Ultimately, Diocletian decided to divinize the emperor (around 300 CE). The smart and feared imperial super-teen Constantine, observing his extended family, the Roman court with the astuteness of youth, stood this on its head: instead of making the emperor god, he made the emperor into the messenger of god, or, as he put it, the “thirteenth apostle”.

The  Greek apostolos means “messenger, person sent forth,” from apostellein “send away, send forth” (“apo” means far, as in apogee). Constantine grabbed this title for himself (and notice Muhammad, the Islamist, did exactly the same, 300 years later…)

Thus God was made in the image of the emperor (the idea was not invented by Constantine, all by himself; Commodus’ mistress was Christian; and Christianism grew in power and quasi-military organization in the Third Century with at least tacit imperial consent).

Yet, fundamentally, the emperor was just a gangster in chief, and thus invited a general mood of gangsterism, encouraging ever more plutocracy, satanic power at the top.

In the end, tax-free plutocratic families grabbed all the powers they could, typically with one family member a war chief, and another a bishop; what was left of the state passed military treaties with various barbarian tribes, playing them against each other, until the Franks, most closely associated to the Roman state since 310 CE, took the complete control, in 507 CE, that they had been officially given by the Roman state in 400 CE.

Atomism

One of the great physicists of the second half of the 20th century, Richard Feynman, wrote at the beginning of his wonderful “Lectures on Physics”:

If, in some cataclysm, all scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words? I believe it is the atomic hypothesis, or the atomic fact, or whatever you wish to call it, that all things are made of atoms – little particles that move around in perpetual motion, attracting each other when they are a little distance apart, but repelling upon being squeezed into one another. In that one sentence you will see an enormous amount of information about the world, if just a little imagination and thinking are applied.”

The idea is found in Cicero’s work. Cicero was a lawyer, statesman and a political philosopher, but not a natural philosopher. However, the idea of atomism was so well-known that he explicitly wrote it down:  “Democritus atomos quas appellat, id est corpora individua propter soliditatem, censet in infinito inani, in quo nihil nec summum, nec infimum, nec medium nec ultimum nec extremum sit, ita ferri, ut concursionibus inter se cohaerescant ex quo efficiantur ea, quae sint quaeque cernantur, omnia, eumque motum atomorum nullo a principio, sed ex aeterno tempore intelligi convenire

“Democritus called them atoms, that is indivisible bodies due to their solidity, in infinte vacuum, in which there is nothing, no up, no down, nor middle nor ultimate nor extremity, which so move that they cohere with each other through collisions, so that out of everything emerges that is, and that is perceived, and that it is right to understand the movement of atoms as movements not from a beginning busince eternal time …”

[My translation, thanks to six years of Latin!]

Carlo Rovelli, director of the quantum gravity group at the Centre de Physique Théorique de Luminy in Marseille, France, is the author of Covariant Loop Quantum Gravity: An Elementary Introduction to Quantum Gravity and Spinfoam Theory (2014) and Seven Brief Lessons on Physics (2016). His latest book is Reality Is Not What It Seems (2016), translated by Simon Carnell and Erica Segre. He wrote:

“I often think that the loss of the works of Democritus in their entirety is the greatest intellectual tragedy to ensue from the collapse of the old classical civilisation. We have been left with all of Aristotle, by way of which Western thought reconstructed itself, and nothing by Democritus. Perhaps if all the works of Democritus had survived, and nothing of Aristotle’s, the intellectual history of our civilisation would have been better. But centuries dominated by monotheism have not permitted the survival of Democritus’s naturalism.

The closure of the ancient schools such as those of Athens and Alexandria, and the destruction of all the texts not in accordance with Christian ideas, was vast and systematic, at the time of the brutal antipagan repression following the edicts of Emperor Theodosius, which in 390–391 CE declared that Christianity was to be the only and obligatory religion of the empire. Plato and Aristotle, pagans who believed in the immortality of the soul or in the existence of a Prime Mover, could be tolerated by a triumphant Christianity. Not Democritus.”

We know of 700 major written works of Antiquity. Only 160 survived Christian rage and destruction: Christian fundamentalists did to civilization and reason what the Islamist State did to Palmyra (and is still doing!) All but ten of these works were saved by the Franks.

Poggio Bracciolini secretary of many popes and was a passionate hunter of ancient books, found the now famous Roman author Lucretius, in the library of a Franco-German monastery. Poggio found many important books of antiquity in these old Frankish monasteries. He found one, just one copy of  Lucretius’ famous poem, De Rerum Natura, which told the symphony of nature as discovered, suspected and guessed by Ancient Greek natural philosophers.

The discovery was made in january 1417. The copy was copied, and then lost! (Or destroyed by some astute Christian scum.) The Catholic fascists forbade the reading of Lucretius in December 1516. In 1551, the Council of Trent made it a capital crime to read Lucretius. (This illustrates the general principle that the Catholic Church went out of control, ever more, after the First Crusade, starting shortly before 1100 CE; it got only worse for the next five centuries…)

The fate of Atomism has become that of civilization. And what of today? Atomism is a fact. Can we improve on Atomism? In a way, we have: see the Standard Model, with its Photons, Gluons, Quarks, Electrons, etc. But we can do, we have done, better. Next.

Trump Attacks Establishment

January 22, 2017

At least with his lips… Media Plutocracy Outraged

Once upon a time in Oahu, president-elect Obama, standing a foot away, invited me to a family event. What happened next I will reveal fully in the far future.  Let me put it succinctly: other actors surprised us with a vicious little plot to turn the invitation into a deep trauma for all involved. Such is the pull of power lust. Such is the greed of the establishment. I thought I had seen everything before, still I was astounded, completely unprepared. Eight years later I am still baffled. (Several divorces came out of it, BTW.)

Chris Hedges, long a star, Pulitzer winning, journalist at the New York Times points out in his latest book, that the Pulitzer is completely rigged by the New York Times itself (by financing the advisor, the Columbia School of Journalism). Wikipedia crows that the “NYT won 117 Pulitzer prizes more than any news organization”. This self-reinforcing glorification is typical of the way the establishment works: by rigging carefully the entire system (the Sulzberger family controlling the Times since 1896; recently government connected Mexican tycoon Carlos Slims became top shareholder, excluding him from NYT criticism; Sulzberger, Cohen and other plutocrats maintain control of the Class B shares, which have full voting power; the Mexican peon, a crony capitalist from Mexico, who bought Mexican Telecom on the cheap, thanks to his friends in government, is restricted to Class A shares, enabling New York plutocrats to keep control).

In other words, those who breathe New York Times, breathe plutocracy, and no wonder I am banned from it. The Deepest State is made by these plutocrats. Unfortunately for them, one of their own has gone to the other side.

Raised Fist, Big Red Flag of a Tie: Lenin Is Back, But Through An Election This Time!

Open Jacket, Raised Fist, Big Red Flag of a Tie: It Looks As If Lenin Is Back, But Through An Election This Time!

Trump was born and raised in the (financial core of the) establishment: first on the periphery, then at its heart, for decades (he admitted this himself explicitly). More than a year ago, he presented himself as a demolisher of said establishment. That was fully confirmed by his inaugural speech.

Haters for hire will howl, according to their nature. However history is full of rebellious plutocrats which turned against the plutocracy they came from. One could even say that this is the most frequent mechanism for real change.

Cleisthenes, the top Athenian plutocrat, from the top family, the Alcmaeonid, plotted extensively against the Athenian tyranny, got Sparta to invade, twice, and finally took power, just to feel that there was no alternative, but total democracy. And then he installed democracy, a democracy so total that tiny Athens became one of the greatest contributor to civilization, ever. (Cleisthenes called his reforms isonomia, “equality vis à vis law”, iso-=equality; nomos=law… not demokratia…)

Here is the entire transcript below of Trump’s inaugural speech, with key portions pointed out in various ways: all caps, highlighted and commented.

TRUMP: Chief Justice Roberts, President Carter, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, fellow Americans and PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, thank you.

[Patrice comment: notice Trump did not forget We the People of the WORLD! So much for his alleged xenophobia… which could not resist Melania’s thick Germanoid accent…]

Original Internationale: Lenin Grabbed the French “l’Internationale” and made it the USSR’s anthem.

Original Internationale: Lenin Grabbed the French “l’Internationale” and made it the USSR’s anthem.

(APPLAUSE) Trump: “We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and restore its promise for all of our people. (APPLAUSE)

Together, we will determine the course of America and the WORLD for many, many years to come. We will face challenges, we will confront hardships, but we will get the job done.

Every four years, we gather on these steps to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power, and we are grateful to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for their gracious aid throughout this transition. They have been magnificent. Thank you. (APPLAUSE)

[Patrice: So much for Trump being a racist pig, as the haters have contended; Hitler did not find “blacks” extra magnificent; Hitler did not salute “blacks”.]

TRUMP: “Today’s ceremony, however, has very special meaning because today, we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the people. (APPLAUSE)

For too long, A SMALL GROUP IN OUR NATION’S CAPITAL HAS REAPED THE REWARDS OF GOVERNMENT WHILE THE PEOPLE HAVE BORNE THE COST. WASHINGTON FLOURISHED, BUT THE PEOPLE DID NOT SHARE IN ITS WEALTH. POLITICIANS PROSPERED, BUT THE JOBS LEFT AND THE FACTORIES CLOSED. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs. And while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land. (APPLAUSE)

[Patrice: This is the “populist” point of view. “We The People”. DEMOS-KRATOS = PEOPLE-POWER. Power to People. The first (and nearly last) democracy, for real (among males) was Athens. Athens’ democracy was a gigantic success in nearly all ways, including driving Athens completely crazy. As a result, Athens’ democracy ultimately failed, and “democracy” became a dirty word for more than two millennia. A similar evolution affected Rome, yet, in slower motion. It is striking that “populist” is viewed as an insult by most Main Stream Media. It is astounding that the clueless little people do not realize that, when they vilify “populism”, they vilify themselves; US “celebrities”, who are paid outrageous amounts of money and power, are besides themselves as the fat rats they are, deep in the establishment cheese.]

Trump again:“That all changes starting right here and right now because this moment is your moment, it belongs to you. (APPLAUSE). It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America. This is your day. This is your celebration. And this, the United States of America, is your country.” (APPLAUSE)

What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether OUR GOVERNMENT IS CONTROLLED BY THE PEOPLE. (APPLAUSE)

[Patrice comment: This is in total contradiction of the “small government” theme of the traditional conservatives. In other words, Trump, long a registered Democrat and a supporter of the Democratic Party with millions of dollars (up to 2010!), is still, well, if not a Democrat, certainly a democrat!]

Trump: “January 20th, 2017 will be remembered as the day the PEOPLE BECAME THE RULERS of this nation again.(APPLAUSE) The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer. (APPLAUSE) Everyone is listening to you now. You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement, the likes of which the world has never seen before. (APPLAUSE)

At the center of this movement is a crucial conviction, that a nation exists to serve its citizens. Americans want great schools for their children, safe neighborhoods for their families, and good jobs for themselves. These are just and reasonable demands of righteous people and a righteous public.

But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge; and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.

THIS AMERICAN CARNAGE STOPS RIGHT HERE AND STOPS RIGHT NOW. (APPLAUSE) We are one nation and their pain is our pain. Their dreams are our dreams. And their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny. The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.(APPLAUSE)

[Comment: Trump has dreams, we all have dreams, like Martin Luther King had a dream…]

Trump: “For many decades, we’ve enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry; subsidized the armies of other countries, while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military. We’ve defended other nations’ borders while refusing to defend our own.(APPLAUSE)

And spent trillions and trillions of dollars overseas while America’s infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay. We’ve made other countries rich, while the wealth, strength and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon.

One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions and millions of American workers that were left behind. The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed all across the world.

But that is the past. And now, we are looking only to the future. (APPLAUSE)

We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first, America first. (APPLAUSE)

[Patrice comment: what happened to plutocracy first? No wonder the news organizations, all of which are owned, or, if not outright owned, controlled by plutocrats

Trump: “Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families. We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs.” (APPLAUSE)

Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength. I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never ever let you down. (APPLAUSE) America will start winning again, winning like never before.(APPLAUSE)

We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams. (APPLAUSE)

We will build new roads and highways and bridges and airports and tunnels and railways all across our wonderful nation. We will get our people off of welfare and back to work, rebuilding our country with American hands and American labor. (APPLAUSE)

[This is a BIG GOVERNMENT program, in complete contradiction to anything done since Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Trump is asking for one trillion dollars, right away, for that infrastructure program.]

Trump: “We will follow two simple rules; buy American and hire American. (APPLAUSE)

We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world, but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first. We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example. We will shine for everyone to follow. (APPLAUSE)

We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and UNITE THE CIVILIZED WORLD AGAINST RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM, WHICH WE WILL ERADICATE FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH. (APPLAUSE)

At the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America, and through our loyalty to our country, we will rediscover our loyalty to each other. WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR HEART TO PATRIOTISM, THERE IS NO ROOM FOR PREJUDICE(APPLAUSE)

The Bible tells us how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity. We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity. When America is united, America is totally unstoppable. (APPLAUSE) There should be no fear. We are protected and we will always be protected. We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement. And most importantly, we will be protected by God. (APPLAUSE) Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger. In America, we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving. We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action, constantly complaining, but never doing anything about it. (APPLAUSE) The time for empty talk is over. Now arrives the hour of action. (APPLAUSE)

Do not allow anyone to tell you that it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America. We will not fail. Our country will thrive and prosper again.

We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to UNLOCK THE MYSTERIES OF SPACE, TO FREE THE EARTH FROM THE MISERIES OF DISEASE, AND TO HARNESS THE ENERGIES, INDUSTRIES AND TECHNOLOGIES OF TOMORROW. A new national pride will stir ourselves, lift our sights and heal our divisions.

[Patrice: Advancing science and technology is the way out. Right now, it takes 50 million dollars and ten years for a potential new drug to go through the government review process. That’s 20 times too much, As a result of the present situation, there are fewer and fewer new drugs. Miracle new drugs, already demonstrated, are completely blocked. Hey, Obama, Michelle and their friends are young and healthy: why should have they cared?]

Trump: “It’s time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget, that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots. (APPLAUSE)

{Patrice comment: I have been called a “racist troll” publicly, for a readership of thousands, by the vile haters out there. Are those from the same mindset which called Trump a racist? But is not racist the one who calls “racist” who is not racist?]

Trump: “We all enjoy the same glorious freedoms and we all salute the same great American flag. (APPLAUSE) And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the wind-swept plains of Nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they will their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty creator.(APPLAUSE)

So to all Americans in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, from ocean to ocean, hear these words: You will never be ignored again.

(APPLAUSE) Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way.

Together, we will make America strong again. We will make America wealthy again. We will make America proud again. We will make America safe again. And yes, together we will make America great again. (APPLAUSE) Thank you. God bless you. And God bless America.

***

All right, I don’t like the God stuff, which reminds me all too much of Obama’s cynical down speaking to the masses. Why could not the secular Trump say:’”bless you. And bless America?” But for the rest, well, I love the combative attack against the establishment.

Obama left for a weekend in Palm Springs, to visit with some of his plutocrat friends whom he made ambassadors. Obama travelled in style, with Air Force One, the giant 747 jumbo jet specially modified by Boeing. As Obama was not president anymore, the plane had a different code name. Operating that jet made to carry 450, costs more than $200,000 an hour. Palm Springs is surrounded by colossal, and magnificent mountains towering nearly two miles higher, some of them covered with forests, lower ones with high altitude desert. The San Andrea fault strikes a straight, highly visible, tumultuous line along the valley. It is one of Earth’s most spectacular places. Yet, it was raining on Obama’s parade. The mighty jet went into a holding pattern, for half an hour. It then had to land one hundred kilometers away. A lesson: Earth is indifferent to human self-importance. That monopolizing a jumbo jet just for himself was Obama’s first post-presidential gesture tells volumes which no philosopher should like.

Over three Christmas, the Hawaiian Obama vacation cost 15 million dollars, in transportation costs, alone. But who is counting? Giant monopolies protected by the globalocracy owe trillions in taxes to We The People, and small businesses. None of the loud mouths of the establishment care (they established it that way).

We are living in the times of the greatest perils, and the greatest potential. And whenever the establishment is in the way, of vital progress we need to make to survive, it should be disintegrated.

And it’s not just empty words: for example the desert, next to Obama’s Palm Springs, can generate colossal amounts of energy (wind, photovoltaics). But then the energy has to be transported. Direct Current High Voltage line is the way to do that. They have to be constructed, at great cost. A big government task. China is doing it (the Changji-Guquan link under construction will carry half the generating power of Spain, and is charged at more than one million volts). But then China has its own space station, which neither Europe nor the US has (the ISS, is not called the International Space Station for no reason, and it’s a great thing… yet it’s symptomatic that Europe and the US think they can’t afford space, let alone science: a 100 meter telescope should be under construction right now; it would (re)solve not just exoplanets, but maybe Quantum Physics; it’s technically feasible, and not that expensive, compared to an hour of Obama).

Thinking, thinking deep, thinking deeper is hard, harder. Nobody protested eight years ago. My despair was not shared, when I saw all the plutocrats and their sycophants making a wall around Obama, sucking even his air, and any single thought. What was going on was clear. How come was I the only one to see it? Much of it was public knowledge, where were the protesters? They could, they should, have helped.

The political establishment had to play the game, and nearly all of it was at Trump’s inauguration, including Clinton. The one notable exception was John Kerry, and it’s not because he is bilingual in French. It is because he is the richest politician in the US (short of Trump!) Kerry had to choose between country and class. He chose the plutocracy.

Thinking creatively, or just correctly, is difficult.

Enough with the insults, lazy little critters, off to work. And work, first of all, requires deep thinking, not “just saying”.

Nihilism Can’t Debate

January 21, 2017

One cannot have intelligence, if one does not learn to debate. Debating does not mean to utter groundless insults, without any basis in reality, as pseudo-”liberals”, pseudo-leftists, pseudo-intellectuals, and others, full of hatred out there, now that their masters have stuffed their otherwise empty minds with fake, false, fallow and misleading news.

The first thing to know, and to accept, when debating superior intelligence and superior civilization, is that there is something called “superiority”, a well-ordering of epistemological values. I just used a mathematical notion, well-ordering and a philosophical one (the theory of knowledge).  Call that the civilizing principle.

However, under the influence of “postmodernism”, a movement which is pretty old by now, a systematic destruction of all values became the province of a class of pseudo-intellectuals. This was actually exactly the sort of nihilism Nietzsche feared.

Renouncing the Rule of Reason is a Mood. All Those Who Respect Superstitious Fanaticism Partake in It

Renouncing the Rule of Reason is a Mood. All Those Who Respect Superstitious Fanaticism Partake in It

Islamophilia (accusing those who criticize holocaust books such as Bible, Qur’an… of being bad people) is an example of renouncement of reason.

For example Nietzsche destroyed Christianism as a slave religion. Obama did his best to revive it (his sponsors love extreme inequality, that is, slavery). This corresponded to the general mood of irrationality. Pseudo-intellectuals established the mood of making attacks against Christianism’s daughter religion, Islamism, into an infamy (whereas it is infamy to support infamy). Never mind that Islam supports slavery explicitly in its sacred text; that was the whole point: Make Infamy Great Again (MIGA). Supporting Islam, by brandishing Islamophobia was a devious way to support “god” that is, Christianism. And sure enough the leading contender for the French presidency is campaigning on Catholicism, the first time this happens in a century…

Those intellectual roaches greatly influenced society and universities. , because the plutocratic masters were delighted: they always advocated nihilism, to deprive those they subjugate of any value (this is an all-encompassing generalization of what both Marx and then Nietzsche, said; Marx attacked more “Das Kapital”, yet mostly forgot the banks; Nietzsche concentrated his critique on Christianism and tribalism, especially pseudo-Germanic tribalism).

The Islamist State seized Palmyra again, and just destroyed more monuments, in their anxiety to demonstrate that their stupid, vicious, criminal, rapacious cretinism they call Islam, is all that ever ruled the Middle East. The Russians, busy in the north, could not stop them. Civilization’s armed forces are nowhere to be seen…. (Obama sent US bombers against Islamists in the last two days of his presidency, killing hundreds of Islamists: too little, too late, but I appreciate the gesture; it’s like saying: ‘you were right’ to the likes of Trump, or yours truly.)

Learning to debate and to gather value added knowledge, is not just a question of being smart instead of being an idiot. Perception can drive the evolution of observable traits, a study on bats and the flowers they feed on, has demonstrated.

Obama Wanted Trump To Win

January 19, 2017

Clinton lost Because Obama wanted it, deep down inside. Machiavel On The Potomac!

Some recent extracts from Obama (link below):“You can’t say it, but you know it’s true!… The end of the Republic has never looked better!… I am going to use it at Goldman Sachs next year!”

Did Obama want Trump to win consciously, or unconsciously? That brings the question of what is conscious, and what is not. The subconscious is neurological circuitry which exists already, but have not been visited officially by consciousness.

At That Point, Obama Told Everybody That He was Going To Be Dropped, Just As A Used Microphone. However, He had A Secret Plan, A Second Foundation: Beat Clinton, And Thus Stay The Head Of the Opposition and the Core Of Hope

At That Point, Obama Told Everybody That He was Going To Be Dropped, Just As A Used Microphone (he dropped the mike next, see link below). However, Obama had A Secret Plan, A Second Foundation: Beat Clinton, And Thus Stay The Head Of the Opposition and the Core Of Hope. Hope That Will Work Better Next T

Obama just said (January 8) that “if you can find a plan that is demonstrably better than Obamacare, I will be the first to publicly support repealing Obamacare. Eight years ago, I asked if there was something better, and got no answer”.

Of course Obama knows very well that more than three dozen countries have better plans than Obamacare, and they are all variations of what would be of Medicare For All”. Namely you make basic health care a government program out of the clutches of plutocrats like Warren Buffet. (Warren Buffet being one saintly plutocrats of the “Democratic” Party.)

Anyway, the initial proposition is best as a question: Why would Obama have sincerely wanted for Clinton to win?

***

Would Obama have sincerely wanted for Clinton to win so that he could become insignificant, replaced, eclipsed?

Of course not.

Obama wanted Hillary to win, because he wanted to save his legacy, bleats the clueless sheep. Sheep is not smart: sheep thinks as one, as the group: know the mind of one sheep, know the mind of all. Actually the shepherd think for the sheep.

Obama’s legacy, as a legislative body, is shot, there is nothing to save It’s so shot through, it amounts so much to nothing, Obama knows it all too well… He may want to correct history and finally make his mark.

***

Why was Obama’s “legacy” so much ado about nothing?

Because Obama let himself be manipulated, feeling that was good “navigation” (a selfish concept central to his worldview). Not that he had a choice. He was not just financed by these people. He was programmed by them.

Ten years ago, Obama used to crow that he had been reading the Financial Times for so long, he actually had started before the Financial Times became required reading among “Democratic” leaders.

Obama has a good reason to be resentful about how his  “legacy” got mangled. Vengeance is a powerful motivation. Who did the mangling? Was that Trump? Trump has nothing to do with it. Far from it: it turns out that Trump was right, all along, on some very important points.

Obama failed, from all the way back, including from the admiration for Reagan, which perverted the Democratic establishment, the Clintons, and even Obama himself. Trump, on the other hand, opposed the globalocracy promoted by Reagan and Paul Krugman. As early as 1987, for all to see.

Obama’s legacy is a plane which gathered speed for take-off, yet, not enough speed to clear the trees. It has crashed. One can drive 3,000 miles across the US, and never leave a state thoroughly controlled by Republicans. Everything indicates that Trump, if he plays his cards well, will have a supermajority in 2018.

The Financial Times has some good articles, occasionally. However, it’s like saying that Pravda (the Soviet equivalent of the New York Times) had good article. Fundamentally, the Financial Times is a fundamentalist Thatcherian-Reaganian newspaper: “There Is No Alternative!” … to the fundamental principle is that greed is the best motivation of human beings, including for building a morality.

As I have said for eight years, there was never much of a Obama government installed to instill hope. First Hank Paulson (Goldman Sachs and Bush Treasury Secretary) told Obama what to do, even before Obama got elected. Worst: Obama agreed to it. Of course, Obama’s economic adviser was Lawrence Summers (re-Goldman Sachs, Harvard). Obama was completely controlled by the Democratic machine, with the Goldman Sachs government, in place since before Bill Clinton’s election. Nancy Pelosi, head of the Democratic majority in Congress, also agreed to Paulson’s plan, after Paulson went down to one knee in front of her.

What happened? Obama was too young, too inexperienced, too naive strategically (street-smart is not world-smart). He was also a tool of the establishment, and he trusted those who trusted him. And it all turned out, into eight years wasted.

Now Obama, at last, is free of all these financial goons and their obsequious servants.

Whereas, if Clinton had won, they would have won. Instead, they were destroyed. Let me repeat slowly: the tormentors of Obama, those who lead Obama astray, those who made Obama’s legacy, mostly the color of a skin, this waste of hope, have been vanquished. Vanquished by Trump, yes, but vanquished. Why would Obama want it otherwise?

Now Obama is the core of hope, the future. Maybe he can make Michelle run, get another eight years that way. This time, with the correct mindset, not as a puppet.

We will see.

Why Obama Failed, Intimate Version

Obama is very smart, world-educated, so how come most of what he did will quickly evaporate, and how come his “signature achievement”, Obamacare, mostly failed? (Some premiums of health insurance are up to an incredible $39,000, a year, for a couple; Obamacare “deductibles” of $6,000 are common.)

I said right from the start, that Obamacare would fail, and how. It did. Obama says that, whoever he asked at the time among politicians, including Republicans, nobody could come up with anything better than Obamacare (he himself proposed what I proposed, Medicare For All, unanimously rejected by the powers that be).

Ask the lost fools out there, and they will tell you that Obama failed because of the Republicans. This is an anti-idea Obama himself contributed to launch when he had a supermajority, to deflect the observation that he was doing exactly what Bush had been doing just prior. It is an answer as genuine as saying the antibiotics failed, because of the germs.

Poignantly, all the more as it was unknowingly, the president himself pointed out the reason in his last press conference: Obama said any president is guided by his advisors. Obama’s team of advisors, though, was not chosen by him, and came short in one way: there was nobody there he could trust to “speak truth to power” (except for his wife, but she was part of the system, being part of the Chicago machine).

All Of Obama's Allowed Friends Clang Way Too Much To Plutocracy, The establishment, And The Criminal Past. All Of Obama’s Advisors Arguably Belong To The Corrupt, Self-Fulfilling Establishment.

All Of Obama’s Allowed Friends Clang Way Too Much To Plutocracy, The Establishment, And The Criminal Past. All Of Obama’s Advisors Arguably Belonged To The Corrupt, Self-Fulfilling, Self-Referential Establishment.

Here is an example: the US Patent System is broken (to the point US companies use China or Europe for patent protection!) All advisors around Obama advised him to make it worse, because, making it worse advantaged the giant tech monopolies. Obama went along, not knowing any better than the fact millions of dollars of his checks came from said monopolies and the dissembling faces and lying lips of the multi-billionaires who were always around. Small, but crucial inventors, and US innovation are among the victims.

Of course, Obama was not told he was making the Patent System worse, to advantage antitrust violators. Instead, Obama went around, claiming he wanted to protect from “non-practicing entities”. In his stupidity, he did not realize that this meant any inventor. The guy was that dumb, because his advisors were that perverse (not knowing it either, as they just focus on the dollar signs coming their way).

“It will be granted that folly is a mental disease, and of folly there are two kinds, madness and stupidity.” Plato, “Timaeus”.

Stupidity often arises from ignorance. Ignorance of facts, or ignorance of possible logics, including of the emotional kind.

Many frenzied maniacs say Trump is an idiot. By this, they may simply mean that they are too ignorant to understand that Trump has a different personality, with different experiences, all very idiosyncratic. Trump did not destroy 18 other presidential candidates without being smart, in some important sense. (Some will observe that means that, by the same token, I consider Hitler smart in some ways. Sure. The military defeat of France and Britain in May 1940 is pretty much attributable to Hitler outsmarting the top general of the French High Command: Hitler laid a trap, in the Netherland, and the stupid French fell in it!)

How do we know Obama failed? Listen to him, or his obsequious, crazed sycophants: they celebrate the fact that Obama “saved the economy”. They forget that Obama had not run to “save the economy”. They don’t tell you how he did it: he followed the plan of Hank Paulson, the Goldman Sachs CEO, Secretary of Treasury of Bush had ordered him to follow. Nor what it consisted of (transferring asset from taxpayers to the wealthiest people in the world, so that they will be as wealthy again, as they were before).

Instead of the nebulous “change you can believe in”, Obama’s “rule” consisted in an extension of Bush. And that’s his proudest achievement: Bush cleaning boy. Obama persisted in 2010, by signing a further extension of the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest.

How did we get a presidency that brain-washed? By isolating the president from common sense. Obama was told to drop his close friends he had for decades, and have no contacts with them whatsoever. Immensely rich “Democratic” operators  told Obama that. As they had dropped the presidency into his lap, he knew better than to confront them.

Bowles, Podesta told Obama:”Friends only cause problems”.  Obama was allowed to keep just three of the “Chum Gang” who had no serious brain of their own, and were extremely scared to disobey the authorities. They went around like human dogs, following their master everywhere (the wives promptly divorced).

Podesta, a lawyer who believes in UFO, big time, got launched under Clinton, and then sold his influence in the “Podesta Group”, making hundreds of millions.

Actually, here is an anecdote, to give you an idea of the level of dangerous lunacy evolved in the so-called “Deep State”. Two of the preceding are siblings, and two other siblings, having incomparably more brains, and scientific educations, were excluded (lest they told Barack what was up and down). One of the sibling worked for a company we will call B (the other sibling worked for a while as a PhD at NASA). At B, sibling IV worked on an aircraft. He was told to sign plenty of papers consigning him to secrecy, under the threat of terrible punishments. He signed. Then he was told:”That was just the legal stuff. In truth, we will just kill you.” After a safe period, he quit B and became a lawyer… This is the Deep State, US style.

So no wonder the environment of Obama was strictly controlled, by the Deep State, under the orders of the Deepest State, namely the plutocracy of the .01%

Obama submitted to this humiliating treatment, because he was promised ever better things (remember the Nobel Prize? Or was that an obedience prize?). The religion of Obama is “navigation” (his word and concept). “Navigation” consists in doing what he is being told by the powers that be. Said another way: “leading from behind”. Leading from behind the Deepest State. This propensity is why Obama was selected.

Obama is “worth” 24 million dollars now, and projected to be ten times that very soon.

The idea of Obama being unable to talk to his friends was that he would be left with the servants of the plutocracy to interact with, and them exclusively. So he socialized extensively with, say, Sheryl Sandberg (ex-paramour of Harvard and Clinton’s Larry Summers, now COO of the spy operation Facebook; never being elected, a young Sandberg was in a huge office at Treasury with a big US flag behind her)

Anywhere, there you have it. Obama loves to say that one should not “do stupid stuff”. Well, how does he know about the countless stupidities of his presidency? From reading the fawning plutocratic “Main Stream Media” press? From all the sycophants around, and greedsters delirious with the desire of being employed by the giant monopolies Obama favored so much?

Obama needed true friends, all-knowing, and completely independent, around him, to chew the fat (Charlemagne and Philippe IV Le Bel of France had them, and Pericles).

Trump has a much stronger personality. He has pulled all around him a number of trusted advisors and family, all of them with the ability to talk truth to power.

You don’t want stupid? Have a debate with serious contradictors. Obama did not, and thus did stupid. So stupid, that it is only now dawning on his subconscious, in the last few months, how stupid it all was. And that’s one of the reason why Obama’s subconscious did not want Clinton to be elected. The continuation of the masquerade, somehow offended the last shreds of decency that his ominous career left him with.

Yes, Obama should have backed up Senator Sanders. Too late now. Another stupid indecency. Fate marches on, as in Greek tragedies of times past.

Pericles did not even accept an invitation to share a meal with his friends. For 30 years. He did not want to get corrupted that way. But then he was spending much of his time with the top philosophers in the world: Protagoras, Zeno of Elea, Anaxagoras, and Aspasia (Pericles had a son with his partner, the stunning Aspasia, from Miletus; Aspasia wrote the most famous discourse “of” Pericles).

And now it is all over. What sort of thermonuclear puppet was that, who was not even allowed by his minders to talk to his real friends? History will want to know, and will be relentless.

In other, but related news, it turns out that 450 million years of paleoclimate reveal a sinister possibility: that scientists dreadfully underestimated considerably the sensitivity of the climate to the CO2 density. This means that the potential rise of temperature facing us by 2100 is 4.5 degree Centigrade (the old maximal was 3 C). An unfathomable catastrophe.

One of the “authorized” idiots, a guy without moral or epistemological compass, one of boyfriends of Obama, from way back, told me grandly this week that I was “inappropriate”. Well, F you.

Those who did nothing in these times of the greatest perils, for humanity, are not just fools. They are criminals. You did not just fail, you did not just fail civilization, you failed intelligence in the galaxy. Off with your minds! Requiem for Obama. Warning for his successor!

Advanced Machiavellian Insulting

January 17, 2017

“Machiavellian Intelligence” is a recent concept. However, it has been practiced for at least 400 million years. What is Machiavellian Intelligence? Any form of intelligence which uses a Theory of Mind to predict, and sometimes, as we will see below, dictate, the behavior of others (this my definition, which generalizes the usual one, which is confined to large social groups).

Any animal with a sufficiently advanced intelligence acts, relative to other animals, with a Theory of what the Mind of the other is. For short, philosophers call that a Theory of Mind.

Elaborated originally when studying primates, the “Machiavellian intelligence hypothesis” (Byrne and Whiten 1988, 1997) is that the large brains of humans grew over the millennia because of intense social competition for reproduction (now of course, food is even more important than reproduction… and survival, more than food… So limiting to a social group is silly.)

However, considered in my much more general sense, Machiavellian intelligence has existed probably since the first fishes ambled on land, if not before (such fishes nowadays, such as Mudskippers spend some time threatening and fighting each other for their piece of mud… It is of such animals and their ilk, we are talking about today).

Insults Depend Upon A Theory of the Mind of the Other. Insults Can Be Noble, Let Alone Well Deserved. However, They Are First A Way To Change Minds, Often For the Worst

Insults Depend Upon A Theory of the Mind of the Other. Insults Can Be Noble, Let Alone Well Deserved. However, They Are First A Way To Change Minds, Often For the Worst

For example the mother crocodile which charges or, actually, any animal making a mock charge, uses a Theory of Mind (they know they may scare away the enemy, because the enemy will be afraid; thus they know something about the mind of the enemy, and they conceive of fear ).

In human beings, Machiavellian Intelligence can reach heights unsuspected by traditional scholarship.

Consider insults. The very principle of insulting depneds upon having a Therory of Mind. Generally insults are viewed first as the mark of anger, the products of gross and primitive minds. But there is much more to it. Insults can be proffered to change the mind of the adversary in a very deep way.

I got severely insulted on the Internet in recent months. The perpetrators have TDS, Trump Derangement Syndrome, according to which whoever did not agree with what they were injected with, is most evil. The plutocratically owned Main Stream Media (including “public” outfits for sale, such as NPR and PBS) decreted that all heretics were racist, homophobic, anti-Muslim, Lesbian, Transexual hater, “Alt-Right”, “red”, combative and generally atrocious. One did not have to be a supporter of Trump to attract a frenzy of insults. Being a simple supporter of the Truth, in any way, was deemed enough for a deluge of insults.

I must confess that I supported the Truth really a lot, partly in the hope of studying the flow of insulters, and what it was the insulters hope to achieve. The more I supported Truth, the more enraged the insulters got. I found that sad, as a simple human being with simple feelings, for people I used to consider friendly, or, at least, decent, yet, the more I got insulted, the more very interesting I found the entire exercise, as a philosopher trending towards ever more sophistication..

ven by people whom I have known face to face, accused me to be a “racist”, an “antisemite”, or a “racist troll”. Several of these people  know my family is multiracial, from three continents. That my parents and closest family fought the Nazis in uniform or in the resistance, taking huge risks, even hunted by Gestapo. Some even knew that said family has been extremely tight with Obama for more than four decades (and they adulate Obama, whom they never met, as if he was the new Golden Calf).

In spite of evidence to the contrary, and without supporting sophisticated reasoning for hurling such infamy, the insults kept coming, and were widely advertized in “social networks”. Someone important explained to me that the insulters were mostly posing to reassure their allies, and employers (in the “liberal” media) that there was no way they knew a monster such as me.

But then I discovered this:

Something insulters want, and all too often get, is for their preys to become according to their insults.

Facebook friend John Michael Gartland agreed: That’s just what I was thinking. Others I exposed the idea to had an “eureka moment”.

So insults flow from a Theory of Mind. “Fighting words” (a legal notion) are there to incite coming to blows. But what I revealed above is more subtle.

Say you know somebody who is not a racist, not a xenophobe, not a liar. Still, suppose that person is insulted, and called, publicly, a “racist”, “xenophobe”, “liar”, and other derogatory terms, relentlessly. What to do to get out of it if denials only excite the insulters to further abuse? Paradoxically, the natural reaction is to embrace the deplorable condition which is unjustly conferred, is to embrace it: that immediately drops the charge of bad faith and lying.

Also, having received already the punishment, why not enjoy its fruits? And if it irritates so much the insulters, why not to strike back with what infuriates them so much?

Such is one of the infernal loops which foster conflicts. Thus, confronted to insults, replying with just “esprit”, tack to tack, as Voltaire (and many others) used to, is not always the wisest behavior. Insults are how the creeps transfer their inferiority to ourselves. Let’s go higher, to crush the insulters, as the roaches they are.

To the violence haters and insulters propose, impose and live by, we have an alternative: intelligent, honest debate, going boldly where they can’t want to. Nothing infuriates them more.
