Heroism Needed To Survive The New Revelations

Human life is brutish and short, and that tends to make our wisdom brutish and short. However, a way to improve our lot is to attain better and fuller wisdom: even if we can’t make the world better, we can make the wisdom better, and bask in it, content to have achieved something important for us, thinking beings… Not forgetting that human beings have always been combat animals, fighting not just each other, but nature itself, the human condition, etc… and also fighting plain old mental inertia. The end result has been progress, and it has been considerable: in general, our ancestors would readily exchange their lives for ours.

So a martial spirit is integral to the human condition in full… not as important as love itself, surely, because love is how we get started and instructed originally… But still, human life is not possible without combat, and the mentality to go with it, evolved by Homo over millions of years. Even evil is part of the slightly monstrous human condition, as it plays the role of limiting human impact in such a way that the ecology survives… because, without ecology, there is no human species.

Humanity is now engaged in the greatest conflict ever. Not just the conflict of democracy and infamy (as with Russia attacking Ukraine). But also the conflict of humanity with terrestrial ecology (the CO2 crisis being only one aspect). This is not the time for whining, but the time for Mars in the service of hopeful intelligence. The time for heroism has come.

Europe has been fearing the reckoning that the time for the ultimate war, the war against mental inertia, had come. With mental inertia disguised as pacifism or brain dead ecology, there is no hope.

Mental inertia is one of the greatest factors of the psychology driving history: Russian autocracy built the world’s largest empire, over seven centuries, and this efficent, relentless brutality, is deeply embodied in Russian culture and psyche. When Lenin killed the Tsar, he killed the monarch, to take his place, with the exact same dictatorial mentality disguised as the exact opposite of what it was, a majority (which is what “Bolshevism” means).

Similarly, but more recently, mass German culture has long made obedience to masters its prime directive (same as Kremlin based Russia since 1300).

Ces deux-la sont faits pour s’entendre

So Germany needs masters to obey and in the modern era, thanks to who have been effectively double agents such as Schroder or Merkel, Germany has found in Putin a new master…. And said master copies the trick which Lenin, Trodsky and Stalin used, claiming to defend the world against “Western” abuse. (Ironically, Lenin and Stalin, while conquering Ukraine, killing millions, also made it into a republic, to soothe the survivors, and Ukraine became a co-founder of the United Nations.)

This German mindset, of finding a master to please comes in part from lack of self-awareness. Germany is unaware that German war criminality of the racist type arises from this desire to please dictators. Eighteenth Century Prussia, which, partly thanks to British help, ended conquering Germany, lived off the racist mood it used against Slavs and Jews. Prussia was led by militaristic dictators. It’s the so-called “Prussian General Staff” which attacked the world on August 1, 1914… An attack which was itself a war crime, naturally followed by atrocities in neutral Belgium.

More than 40 democracies have realized that the attack by the nuclear dictator of the Kremlin, who threatened to turn the world to “radioactive ashes”, is an existential threat to themselves… even more so than German Nazism, and this is why they have reacted so strongly (even Sweden and Switzerland who discreetly collaborated with Hitler when the going was good). This is why these 40 democracies are military allies of Ukraine (whereas in the first year of the Second World War, Hitler had powerful lallies such as Japan, Italy, and… Russia… France and Britain (and their empires) pretty much fought alone (Poland had been defeated by Hitler and Stalin, who turned around to attack Finland).

The present conflict is then the greatest world war ever in the number of participating countries… Those who don’t see it as a world war, don’t know how to count. If the US had given France in 19139, or 1940, the sort of support it is giving to Ukraine, the Nazis would hev been promptly defeated, instead of killing so many and ravaging so much.

***

Nazism is the abbreviation for National-Socialism. The real Nazi Party was neither national, nor socialist: it killed around ten million German speaking people, which does not strike me as efficient nationalism, and, far from being “socialsit” was mostly the toy, and tool, of various plutocrats (some in the US, some in Russia, some even in Italy as Hitler himself complained to Rommel… using the word “plutocrat”… adding that he detested having to sit with them and exchanged pleasantries).

Now in some ways Nazism succeeded to bring an ephemeral good life to most Germans, as long as they had peculiar “racial” credentials. That was paid by a moral apocalypse, borrowing money and the future, and also by stealing various minorities and opponents.

Putinism has also made life superficially better for many Russians, yet, as in Nazi Germany, that was paid by augmenting inequality and corruption, expelling intellectuals, rejecting an ever smarter socioeconomy, destroying critical thinking, establishing dictatorship, and borrowing from the future by creating a commodity dependent economy.

***

This has become a small planet, and democracy can’t share it with nuclear armed dictatorships. Whether nuclear armed tyrants can share the planet with each other is irrelevant. In this world war, most democracies, nearly all the most advanced ones, are fighting for their survival in Ukraine, and they know it.

This is indeed the time of the great revelations (apocalypses in Greek). Only heroism will carry us through. The era when heroism is necessary has come.

Ukraine is showing the way.

Слава Україні!, Sláva Ukrayíni!
Patrice Ayme

Caesar was assassinated just before he was going to leave with Rome’s best army ever, by a long shot, to solve the Persian and German problems, in one giant scythe move, mostly from behind. Augustus and his successors did not solve the German problem, so Rome was invaded by Germans. The Franks would solve the German problem over three centuries (~500-800 CE) through a direct assault… Shortly afterwards, by the Tenth Century, the Saxons became the most ardent defenders of Romanitas, and saved Europe from the savage Hungarians…… The Persian problem later became an Islamist problem, when the Arabs, armed with a war like religion, Islam in its Sunni, then Shiah versions, conquered Persia… To some extent that problem has not been solved yet. Caesar died in part because he was seriously too heroic, going into the Senate unarmed, and with Marcus Antoninus (who was held in conversation at the door by one of the co-conspirators… Caesar and MA were redoutable hand to hand fighters).

An interesting analysis! Reminds me of some of the ideas that I’ve read were circulating in fascist Italy in the 20s and 30s.

Is that really where we are now? I wouldn’t discount the possibility — although history seems to have a way of amazing us with its capacity to produce novelty.

Dear Curtis: Thanks for finding my essay interesting… However, let me point out that I am in all important ways advocating philosophical and political systems completely opposed to what Mussolini, Gentile, and Hitler called fascism. Fascism rests on few thoughts, few emotions and few leaders, plus the principle of authority of the leader (“Fuhrerprinzip”). I could not disagree and despise more all these practices and the theory behind them. I believe that from the diversity of thought, and only from it, truth arises.

As my family was in the resistance, saved more than 100 Jews, was chased by the Gestapo, and suffered terrible deaths from… fascism, I am keen to distance myself from this vast infamy (now again alive with Putin and his collaborators).
It is true that professor Gentile (ghost writer for Mussolini) advocated primacy of thought, he was not the first one to do so (see Descartes, for example). Advocating primacy of thought when one is a fascist seems to me a contradiction. I advocate primacy of thought as a total democrat (pun not intended).

Since science and thus analysis have progressed a lot in a century, I do believe that the best of today’s wisdom, rising on the shoulders of advancing theory and experimentation, is not just a repeat of what was known a century ago… Especially by fascists, who were nearly as wrong as wrong could be.

Where we are right now is a situation so incredible, it did not happen nor was it anticipated before: turning the world to “radioactive ashes” was actually threatened, just because a democracy is hated, naturally enough, by a place (the Kremlin) where fascist tyranny has been successful for seven centuries.

Apologies if you think I was charging you with fascist tendencies. I was only recalling that sentiments like the one quoted above helped, I think, fertilize the soil that European fascism was planted in in the 20s and 30s. A Nietzschean belief in the importance of the combat-ready Overman fulfilling his true nature while holding the key to “progress.”

      Thanks for reassuring me, Curtis!
Humans have been the top predators for millions of years, and this has been denied in traditional recent, “Western” humanism all too long. It is true that the fascists, looking at the theory of evolution, and its struggle for existence, recognized that brutality, and embraced it, to try to justify their unjustifiable will to infamy… But most prior civilizations have embraced the horridness of the human condition and nature, from Rome to the Maya, and the Bushido code of ethics… It does not mean that’s all they embraced: imperial fascist Rome had scholarships for poor students.

Top predation has consequences, as shown by the recent invasion of a democracy, Ukraine, for no good reason whatsoever… no reason, as long as one does not read the version of (fake) history Putin endorses… and one remembers the predatory instinct.

Nietzsche himself, paradoxically, didn’t like evolution theory, and even more paradoxically, hated anti-Semitism and German hyper nationalism, especially of the militaristic type (the herd). He broke up from his friend and fellow musician Wagner because of this. However Nietzsche’s sister, who managed his affairs for decades after his death, was the exact opposite, and she distorted Nietzsche’s writings, became a Nazi Party member, and befriended Hitler, who went to her funeral in 1935.

The Nietzschean superman does not believe in progress as conventionally understood, say by Auguste Comte’s “Positivists” (contemplate the Brazilian flag and its motto) and is mostly directed towards a mystical “amor fati”… which was nothing new (In sha’Allah, mainstream Islam has this command mandated when addressing the future, for example).
Amusingly that’s not too far from Socrates (combat ready, and combat experienced)… And Nietzsche himself observed he was continually fighting with Socrates, precisely because he was so close to him.

Ultimately, European fascism was defeated in combat, by combat and only combat could have done it. The newspaper of the French resistance, directed by Albert Camus, was called “combat”.

Camus urged his readers to “be suspicious of those who speak the loudest in defense of democratic ideals and absolutes but whose goal is to instill fear in opponents and to silence dissent.” Camus recorded for posterity the liberation of France from the Nazis… through… combat:

“Paris is firing all its ammunition into the August night. Against a vast backdrop of water and stone, on both sides of a river awash with history, freedom’s barricades are once again being erected. Once again justice must be redeemed with men’s blood.”

5,000 resistance and military personel died during the liberation of Paris in six days, 19-15 August 1944.

Correction. Homo has only been around for approximately 200,000 years.

Homo Sapiens is now known to be indeed older than 230,000 years.

HOMO (from Latin homō ‘man’) is the genus that emerged in the (otherwise extinct) genus Australopithecus that encompasses the extant species Homo sapiens (modern humans), plus several extinct species classified as either ancestral to or closely related to modern humans (depending on the species), most notably Homo Erectus, Homo Antecessor, Homo Heidelbergsis, Homo Neanderthalensis, and Homo Denisovianus. The genus emerged with Homo Habilis just over 2 million years ago.

Homo Habilis apparently made stone tools, and much of what became human mentality evolved then… So our ancestral psychobiology is at least that old.

The 200,000-year-old age of Homo Sapiens was reconstructed based on skull shape and size and the type of stone tools. More recent analyses suggest that the current form of Homo Sapiens’ cognitive genes emerged only 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. At the same time, the idea that Homo Neanderthalensis was frighteningly clever has gained ground. Homo Heidelbergsis and Homo Neanderthalensis very likely used ranged weapons and cooked their food.

Indeed. The latest sample evaluated to 230,000 years BP was published a few weeks ago.
I know nothing about “cognitive genes”. I would appreciate more data.
Neantherdals burned coal 80,000 years ago, and cooked vegetable more than 200,000 years ago. Neanderthals disppeared Cave Bears and most probably domesticated European wolves, creating dogs… Considering that full dogs existed already 35,000 years ago (Belgian dog).
I have a theory on Neanderthals’ dissolution:
          https://patriceayme.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/why-did-neanderthals-disappear/

          MATH “EXTINGUISHED” NEANDERTHALS, Mostly.
          2 Votes

HOW & WHY (SOME) NEANDERTHAL TRAITS WERE OUTBRED:

Abstract: Considering what is known about Neanderthals’ physiology, especially their mass, and brain development, they were at a reproductive disadvantage relative to the more gracile and less energy demanding Homo Sapiens they met. In combination with quasi-extinction events, and exponential demographic recovery, the dilution of Neanderthals’ genetic traits, except when vastly superior, was thus ineluctable, as observed.

So it’s not the fittest traits which survived Neanderthal-Sapiens interbreeding, but the most easily reproduced traits. This generalizes to other evolutionary situations, and provides with a new mechanism for the machinery of evolution.

Many racist theories fester around the “disappearance” of Neanderthals. The latest one, from Oxford University, claims that Neanderthals’ big, beautiful eyes, and their big muscles caused their demise: Neanderthals were too busy looking at things, while flexing their muscles. The “idea” is that larger eyes would have crowded the Neanderthal brain out, making them relatively stupid. How stupid can Oxford get?

I would dispute “Ukraine is showing the way”. When a President puts his main political opponent under house arrest for wanting to produce a Russian vaccine against Covid 19 when the President had refused to introduce any of the Western vaccines, when the President freezes said leader’s money, and when said President closes down TV stations that do not approve of him, I do not find that particularly appealing.

Which “leader” have we been talking about? The traitor who has been intenationally and judicially sanctinonned, under an international warrant of arrest, and fled to Moscow in 2014? Well, these are judicial decisons, several older than the Z presidency.

The main opponent of Zelinskiy is the preceding president, and he is an esteemed important commander in the present National Guard. He engaged in combat. His relationship with Zelinskyi is perfect.

I have seen him interviewed many times, on French and US TV, many channels, Fox, CNN, ABC, etc… He speaks perfect English. Z got 73% in the last lelections, and beat him.
The TV stations which were closed have also been closed in the rest of Europe, because they are Putler propaganda outfits, the sort you have apparenly fallen a victim of, too…
