Ukrainian Symbols: Not From Nazism, But From Ancestral Viking Ukraine

June 6, 2023

Yes, Ukraine is originally a Viking state, and much more so than Kremlin’s Rus. Much has been made of Ukrainian symbols also used by the Nazis, to claim Ulrainians are Nazis. This is beyond idiotic, as Ukraine suffered enormously at the hands of Nazi policies… and even the Nazis themselves, if they were back, would certainly not apply those policies, which turned out to be criminal and self-defeating. So when a symbol appears that the Nazis also used, that doesn’t mean Ukrainians approve of these policies.

The Prime minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, is of Jewish descent (according to the New York Times). So not just president Zelinskyi is Jewish. The preceding PM, elected in 2016, Volodymyr Groysman, was also of Jewish descent. As anti-Judaism was the core of the idiotic Nazi doctrine of Hitler, clearly, Ukraine, being led by Jews since 2016 is not Nazi.

Right, President Zelinskyi is seriously not at all a practicing Jew; however the Nazis would have considered him a Jew, according to their criminally insane racial imbecility! So here, to call someone a “Jew” I apply the Hitler madness… which curiously enough Hitler himself couldn’t apply to himself, as he didn’t know who his grandfather was; there is plenty of evidence that Adolf’s granpa was Jewish!

The Ukrainian state was founded, or at the very least organized by Vikings who had basically been hired from Sweden by the Republic of Novgorod (in northern present day Russia) to establish law and order. The Rurik dynasty’s  authority was accepted by the city’s veche (a direct democratic assembly). The Novgorod Republic thrived under Rurikid rule.

In the 10th century when Prince Vladimir the Great, appointed by his late father the ruler of Kyiv, had to raise a Norwegian army to reconquer Rus from his rogue half-brother (that means the reach of Kyiv extended all over Scandinavia).  Vladimir the Great grabbed Crimea back from rebels, married Anna, the sister of the Byzantine emperor, and Vladimir christianized Rus.

Runic writing, also known as the runic script or the (old or new) Futhark, was used by various Germanic and Scandinavian peoples, under various guises, including the Vikings, during the medieval period. The runic script was utilized by various cultures across Northern Europe before the introduction of the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. Runes had both an alphabetical role, each symbol being a sound, but also represented concepts.

The SS symbol of the SS juxtaposed two runes pronounced like a “Z” meaning Sun, but also Strength, and by extension Sieg (victory)  etc.Schutzstaffel “Protection Squadron” (SS; also stylized as ᛋᛋ with Armanen runes). The pointed up arrow was an ancient rune representing Thor, the top god (but also spear, faith, etc.)

During the Viking Age, the term “Rus” was commonly used to describe a group of Scandinavian seafarers and traders who established trade routes and settlements in Eastern Europe, including present-day Russia and Ukraine. These Vikings, known as the Rus, exchanged goods from Constantinople in the south for the furs and dried cod of the north. The Viking ships carried goods on the north to south rivers of Rus.

The Nazis had a fascination for Scandinavia and old Germania, so they reintroduced runic and other Viking semiotic, while reinterpreting them a bit.. Ukrainian itself is more Pagan than Russian, which was westernized by Peter the Great.

Putin deliberately confused the historically uncouth by making them believe that Jews are running a Nazi state in Ukraine. It is true that initially, in summer of 1941, during operation Barbarossa, Ukrainians hoped that the Nazis came as liberators. Ukraine had just suffered a holocaust at the hands of the Kremlin. In the Holodomor of 1933, Stalin had killed six million Ukrainians.

Naturally, post Stalin’s death or execution, several of the leaders who de-Stalinized the USSR were themselves Ukrainian (Kroutchev, who led what may have been a coup, and became chief of the USSR, after getting rid of Beria who may have assassinated Stalin; Brejnev was also Ukrainian).

However, to the disgust of many officers and even to the dismay of many in the Nazi army, as early as 1941, the Nazi invasion turned into a Holocaust which made Ukrainians very hateful of Nazism… and rightly so (one can read the memoirs of Sander, a fanatic Nazi officer, which have been just published).

Just because evil people used ancient symbols doesn’t mean that these symbols are evil. An example is the Celtic Cross, now viewed as right wing… when it’s just beautiful. Symbols traveled: the Svastika was used for millennia in India, Greece, Scandinavia… the Muslim Crescent was initially a Byzantine symbol, which fit the Moon adoring Mecca very well… Islam uses the Crescent… although its origins (Meccan Paganism borrowed from ancient Byzanthium) are rather unsavory (if one wants to play Muslim fundamentalist)…

Humanity has used symbols for millions of years. Making a superstitious fixation about Nazism semiotic is no way to cure… Nazism.
